Soil gases – predominantly carbon dioxide, oxygen, methane, nitrogen, nitrogen dioxide, and water vapor – provide valuable information about biogeochemical processes including activity in soil that is crucial to agriculture. Mesa Photonics’ soil gas analyzer uses two techniques to track the changing concentrations of the key gases. Raman spectroscopy gives simultaneous measurements of CO2, O2, CH4, and N2. Laser spectroscopy is used for N2O, CO, and H2O.
Photo shows mid-IR spectroscopy system using a 2” diameter integrating sphere. Field measurements are planned for DOE’s East River site near Crested Butte, CO.
